Te Ara I Whiti | The Lightpath Cycleway in Auckland Wins Top Prize In Berlin
PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop Sound Barrier Features On Award Winning Auckland Bridge
Auckland’s new cycleway featuring PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop sound barriers has won the Transport Completed Building Category at the World Architecture Festival in Berlin.
The 700 metre long bridge named Te Ara I Whiti or, ‘The Lightpath’ in Maori, was the pick of the 10 shortlisted projects completed by Internationally renowned architects, judged on a criteria of design quality, innovation, imagination and general contribution to architecture.
Colour & Light Key To Success
The bridge that connects Upper Queen Street and Quay Street has a standout feature that most probably won over the judges – lighting. There are 290 vertical LED lights mounted on steel columns that sit in between the 612 panels of PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop, which change colour and follow the riders as they make their way along the bridge. “They will be followed by light, which symbolises the bridge as a sleeping creature who is woken by the people crossing it and wants to play”, says project Creative Director David Hayes.
The lights have 4.2 billion colour combinations and power down when nobody is on the path, reducing electricity consumption. Without doubt, the crystal clear noise barrier made from clear acrylic PLEXIGLAS® Soundstop, lends itself perfectly to the bridge, allowing the light show to be seen through from the outside by the rest of Auckland City.
